Everyone in the family is busy; parents are work, keep the house clean, and try to keep an eye on the kids, and the kids have homework, social gatherings, and extracurriculars taking up their time. It’s understandable that everyone wants to spend their down time watching TV and ordering takeout because they’re too tired to do anything else. Unfortunately, every parent knows the consequences of this lifestyle; obesity and a whole other onslaught of health problems in the future. It’s in everyone’s best interests to keep the whole family healthy and happy, so here are a few things you can try out right now.
Check ups
Before you get started, everyone should know where they stand with their health, especially the grown ups. But don’t just make an appointment with your doctor, get checked out by the dentist too. Even if you don’t think anyone will need a consultation with Family Braces down the line, it’s still a good idea to check your oral hygiene, as it could indicate if something is wrong. Poor oral hygiene can lead to health problems, including digestion problems, and issues with the heart and other major organs. Once you’re sure that the whole family is in relatively good health, you can take steps to keep it that way.
Exercise
The best way to motivate kids to do more exercise, is to disguise it as good old-fashioned playtime. If you have fairly young children, take them to the park and actually play with them; run around to catch them on the slide, push them on the swings, or try getting involved in their game of tag. With slightly older kids, organise fun family days out on weekends. This could involve getting everyone on their bikes and riding down the coast before stopping for a healthy picnic, or getting out the water pistols and having an all-out war. If you show your children the value of getting out of the house and having a good time, they may never catch on that you’re doing this for the exercise.
Eating right
After all that exercise, you want to keep up the good habits by cooking healthy food for your family. However, the best way to get everyone involved in the new health plan, and maybe take some of the load off you, is to get everyone cooking together. Not only will this be a fun family activity, it will teach your children valuable life skills and ensure that they know how to cook healthy meals for themselves. Another way to help is to not encourage them to have seconds or clean their plate. It’s better to let them have a smaller portion than to overstuff themselves.
Sleep
Young kids love to stay up late because they think all adults throw parties once they go to sleep, and teenagers are fond of burning the midnight oil on last minute projects. But a proper night’s sleep can boost their brain power, reduce stress, and give them more energy during the day.
