I had the opportunity to interview Bellamy Young on our recent trip to LA for the #WrinkelInTimeEvent. Bellamy portrays President “Mellie Grant” on ABC’s show, Scandal, alongside Kerry Washington as “Olivia Pope”. If you have not seen Scandal, you need to tune in now as this is the final season of the show.
One of the things that surprised me about Bellamy was that she is the complete opposite of her character on the show. She is very down to earth, and you can feel the room light up with all of her positivity. On the show, we see her character “Mellie Grant” struggle with her insecurities as she relies on “Olivia Pope” to help her make some of her decisions.
Bellamy is also in the film, A Wrinkle In Time. Although Bellamy has a small role in the film, she was very excited to be in a film directed Ava DuVernay. She and Ava worked together previously when Ava directed Season 2 of “Scandal”. In the movie, Bellamy plays “Camazotz Woman”. Regarding her part in the film, Bellamy says “working with Ava is a dream. She’s such a visionary, and it was a joy to do. But the book meant everything to me when I was a kid. So, even the tiny little bit, just to be a part of something that might get other kids to read the book, or get excited about it.” I have to agree. Madeleine L’Engle crafted an amazing book that will stay with generations to come, and even inspire others to read the book.
The final season of Scandal takes us on a journey as we see “Mellie” grow less dependent of “Olivia”. You can see that she has evolved and is more comfortable with giving orders, and relying more on herself. We asked Bellamy how she felt about the final season of Scandal, and she said she was sad that the show is ending. “I marvel at her. It’s been a great, great gift. Not just the fact of having a job, but the fact of getting to be her”.
Bellamy spoke to us about the crossover episode between Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder airing Thursday, March 1 on ABC. She said she was super excited when she read the script. “They were like, “It’s going to be a crossover” and we were speechless …and then we opened it, and the story is so, like, immaculate, it just had to happen. And I got to act with Viola Davis, ya’ll”.
I asked Bellamy what was next for her since Scandal was coming to an end. She said she just wrapped up going to Slamdance Film Festival with a movie called “Bernard and Huey”. She is also very excited that she gets to stay and continue to be a part of the ABC family. She is going to be shooting a pilot for ABC called “False Profits”. As a fan of “Scandal”, I am very excited that we will be able to continue to see Bellamy on TV. I hope that in the show “False Profits”, while we won’t have “Mellie Grant”, we will see Bellamy evolve into another character that we will all fall in love with again.
