By now you may have had the chance to see Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time. If you have, you may have noticed the unique costumes that all of the Mrs. characters in the movie were wearing. The amazing costumes are the creation of costume designer, Paco Delgado. The Mrs. come to life in their costumes. If you have not seen the move yet, what are you waiting for?
Paco Delgado is from Spain and was nominated for the Academy Awards in the category of Best Costume Design twice: at the 85th Academy Awards for the film Les Misérables, and at the 88th Academy Awards for the film The Danish Girl.
We had the opportunity to speak with Paco last month during our #WrinkleInTimeEvent where he explained how he was able to craft the costumes for the film. He said “Oprah’s character that she was Mrs. Which. She was a warrior that was fighting in the universe against the forces of evil. And she was originally, like a supernova that exploded and became… all this energy. Then you already know, Oprah’s character has to be energy. And she’s a warrior. Then you already have there so much information. Then Reese, Mrs. Whatsit, she is very playful. You see the way she engages with the children and the silly things that she says to them. Then you think, well, you know, she is very playful. She has to have another form outside that she has to be, interesting and fun. And then Mindy is Mrs. Who. She speaks with quotes from books. Then I thought, well, you know, this lady’s a super… librarian of the universe. She has all of the culture of the universe into herself. Then, you know, I mean, we can draw things from every culture in the world, like Japanese, African, and so on , I use all of these pieces of information to create an image of what the costumes should look like.”
When I watched A Wrinkle In Time, one of the things that captivated me were the details in all of the costumes that the Mrs. wore. Some of the costumes we made with metal, glass, beads and fiber optics. Paco explained that sometimes even when he had an idea of what he wanted the costumes to look like he still had to go back and check with Director Ava DuVernay. If she didn’t like something he would need to go back to the drawing board. Then he would ask the actors and they would give him feedback and then he would have to tweak the costume again.
All of the costume pieces made required a lot of work and detail. Paco explains “It is a difficult process because we were trying different things, and making a lot of mistakes. Then, for example particularly this dress, Oprah’s dress that is has light, it took ages to make. I mean, weeks and weeks and weeks and weeks and weeks, because we never found the right amount of electricity for it to gleam from inside, so it could be seen in normal conditions. And then, oh! Wow! We were very over-excited. Oh my god, this is amazing! And the thing is, we went to show it to Ava in a normal room like this, and then it doesn’t work!”
The pieces Paco and his team made for the film were unbelievable. I hope that you are able to see the film and really enjoy all the incredible work that it took into making these pieces. I am sure if you watch the film in 3D you will get to see their details even better.
