As a parent, you do everything for your child. Even when they’re all grown up and want to lead their own life, you’re never going to stop wanting to step in to help them out. But as young toddlers and becoming just old enough to start school, you’re the one in charge of what they get up to.
You do whatever you can to foster their creativity, whether that be have them learn a musical instrument, have them start drawing out all their thoughts on every surface they can use a pencil on, or building entire cities out of the blocks that are a staple of the toy box. But as they get older and older, their interests are going to change, and thus your tactics are going to have to change as well.
Ask Them What They Enjoy
This is always going to be the first step to making sure you know your child’s interests, as parents aren’t always as observant as they want to be. But when you can sit down your kid as they’re playing, or whilst you’re having dinner together, and ask them what they love or what they think is fun, you’ve got this in the bag!
It can make for really fun and interesting conversation for the both of you, as it can be hard to talk to your 6 or 7 year old about how their day went and keep them focused on the conversation. Reserve that for the adults when you get a chance to have some grown up talk. Instead, be more specific with what you want to know, and you’ll start getting the answer you’re looking for instead of a shrug or an answer that’s incredibly confusing.
Encouraging Your Child to Go to Bed
This is something all parents are going to come across in their lives. Children are bundles of energy that love to discover the world around them, and they never seem to want to hit the hay at the end of a long day. You might even find yourself at some point arguing with your toddler about when an acceptable bedtime is! But it’s important that kids get plenty of sleep, and that you set them down at regular times in a dark, quiet, and calm environment they can drift off in.
If you’re stuck for what to do in a situation like this, and it seems no matter how hard you’re trying your little one just won’t stay in bed, you can use some tips according to Mattress Advisor. There’s plenty of ideas on the internet for getting your child to want to drift off to sleep, including reading them a story, giving them a nightlight, and making sure the TV is off at least a half hour before they need to sleep.
Your child is going to be an enigma to you at times, even over some necessary bodily processes!
