Disney World has been hard at work. They are creating new immersive and interactive
environments to thrill and amaze current and future generations for years to come. Part of the
amazing growth is the creation of a new Disney Vacation Club Resort themed to the French
Riviera. The new resort is located near Caribbean Beach. As such, The Riviera connects to
Hollywood Studios and Epcot via the Skyliner system. As the opening date draws near, Here
are some updates on the new Riviera Resort at Walt Disney World.
Inspiration
One of the things that makes Disney Disney is that one little spark of inspiration that begins a
project. The inspiration sets the story in motion. It’s not enough to have a themed resort at
Disney World. What is really important is why that theme? In the case of the Riviera, it makes
a sort of standard and boring proposal into something more romantic by evoking the history of
Walt Disney.
Like all of the best Disney developments the Riviera Resort ties in with authentic Disney History
and celebrates the moments that shaped the company into what it is, while simultaneously
creating something new. The Riviera Resort draws its inspiration from the European tour Walt
Disney took with his wife in 1935. It this trip that inspired Walt through stories and architecture.
It’s also where he drew inspiration for the Monorail and other ideas that would find their way into
Disneyland 20 years later. Even Epcot benefits from ideas born out of this historic vacation that
never made it into Disneyland.
New Signature Dining
The Riviera Resort will feature a rooftop signature dining experience inspired by the cliffside
restaurants of Europe. The menu will feature French and Italian food and the sweeping view
over Disney World will include sights of nearby Hollywood Studios nighttime spectaculars! The
restaurant, Topolino Terrace, will also offer character breakfast, but so far there is no
announcement about who those characters might be. Venture a guess in the comments.
DVC Resale
Not so good news is that this DVC resort will not be accessible to those who buy existing DVC
memberships through resale. The Riviera Resort is a new Disney Vacation Club Resort with
Skyliner access to Epcot and Hollywood Studios. It is set to open when Star Wars: Galaxy
Edge opens in Hollywood Studios in the fall. This resort marks a new phase in Disney Vacation
Club resorts and as such is not included among the existing 14 that DVC members currently
own. However, this only applies to resale. Although, the new restriction does potentially impact
the resale market and practicality of buying DVC at new resorts going forward.
