Recently I had the opportunity to screen Disney Channel’s “Sydney to the Max” Hair switch episode. It was an important episode as it discusses a lot on POC and Black hair.
Growing up I had a very hard time trying to figure out my hair, my dad was a single parent and most of the time he would just put my hair in a ponytail. Once he was married my stepmom decided she couldn’t deal with Afro-Latina hair so she would make me get a relaxer every 6 months.
Truth be told relaxers can be super hard on not only your scalp but also it can fry your hair and damage the roots. The sad part is I didn’t know any better as a kid they would always say I had “kinky” hair, and for some reason, I thought that was bad.
So I pretty much went with the flow and just thought yea my hair type is bad and I need to control it more. Granted no one ever talked to me about my hair, what I could do to embrace my hair, or any tips on how to make it better. It wasn’t until I was in my 20’s that I really starting having knowledge of why my hair was the way it was, starting with my African heritage.
It wasn’t until I discovered my ethnicities and my background that I realized why my hair was the way it was and that I needed to embrace who I was. Once I found the right salons and hair technicians who knew how to address Black Hair I felt that I could put in the right product and have control over my natural curly afro hair!
So when they aired Sydney To The Max episode on THE TOPIC OF HAIR I have to say I almost did a standing ovation. I love how Disney is addressing these types of topics and that it is with characters that are going through the same situations themselves.
I loved how the episode teaches us to embrace who we are as women and to love our bodies and our hair. And that we should not let others control how feel about it. Recently I was able to take part in a Q & A with some of the cast members from the show and talk about the episode. I loved each of their perspectives and what they thought about the episode.
