When you first meet Storm, it’s hard to believe that she is just 14 years old. She is so mature for her age and knows what she wants to accomplish in her life… at least for now. I had the pleasure of interviewing her last month while I was on the press junket for Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time, along with 24 other bloggers.
In the film, A Wrinkle In Time, Storm portrays Meg Murry, a typical middle school student struggling with issues of self-worth who just wants to fit in. The daughter of two world-renown physicists, she is intelligent and uniquely gifted, as is Meg’s younger brother, Charles Wallace, but she has yet to realize it for herself. Complicating matters is the mysterious disappearance of Mr. Murry, which has left Meg devastated and her mother broken-hearted.
What is so inspiring about Storm is that she is practically playing a character which pretty much every teenager can identify with. So many pre-teen and teenage girls struggle with self-worth, especially with the way they look and how others view the way they look. One of the questions that was asked to Storm was “How does it feel being, you know, this next generation’s heroine, like multicultural, and you know, inspiration to little girls, who look like you?”
I loved her answer “It means everything to me and it’s very empowering for me still as a young, little girl being able to represent the little girls that look like me, and being able to give them hope and know that they can have any opportunity they wanna have and they can do anything no matter their big hair or their big nose, as people say, or their glasses or their skin tone. They can do anything. So, for me to be able to be that for them and be an inspiration and to uplift them and empower them in a time like this where everybody’s so divided and it’s so dark, it means a lot.”
As a mother, I am proud that we still have teenagers like Storm that want to make a positive impact on our kids. Our world can be very cruel, as we have seen kids tear each other apart on YouTube and social media. When she replied that she was happy to be an inspiration and someone that could uplift other girls, I was excited. I was thrilled that my kids will have hope for their generation, that there is still time for the next generation of actors coming up in Hollywood to make positive impacts.
Storm started acting when she was 3 years old. It is hard to believe this young actress has been making movies for 11 years, but this is the first film in which she is has a lead role. It is great to see her in roles where she is able to grow together with her character. Storm reminds me of an old soul. I think we should be on the lookout for her in the years to come. More than being an actress, I think Storm could be the next Rosa Parks of our kid’s generation. The way she wants to change the world is remarkable.
