“Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob Squarepants!” It’s a line that we’ve all heard a thousand times before and one that still never gets old.
And honestly, I don’t care if SpongeBob was meant to be a cartoon show for kids…because I’ve loved his character from the first time I’ve watched. There’s just something about his humor that drew me in.
When I heard that SpongeBob SquarePants was being made into a musical back in 2016, I have to admit that I wondered what it was going to be about and how they were going to pull it off…but after watching it on TV recently, my mind was literally blown.
There is no doubt in my mind as to why this musical was nominated for 12 Tony Awards when it first was created..it’s just that good. And even though I watched it on TV due to the COVID pandemic instead of live, I can tell you that it’s really quite the musical to see.
It’s full of zingers, and laughter and all your favorite SpongeBob characters are there. The whole gang has shown up to make this a fun affair!
While I was super pumped to pull up a chair and watch, I’d have to say that my boys were right along with me.
If you’re looking for a family-friendly musical that will hold everyone’s attention all the way through, this is the one for you!
Reviewing SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical
Literally everything about this musical was wonderful. I loved the entire look and I thought that the cast was chosen perfectly for each and every role.
And speaking of roles, I have to dive in a little bit and talk about a couple of people that I was able to speak to directly about their role in the musical and the TV Show.
Tom Kenny as the voice of SpongeBob
The great thing about Tom Kenny is that he is a master at changing up his voice. He’s obviously known for his voice of SpongeBob but he also is the voices for Dog in CatDog and others.
His voice is the classic voice that we’ve grown up loving on the show. Every episode he nails and articulates perfectly and keeps drawing us in for more.
Another fun fact about Tom Kenny is that his wife is also part of the SpongeBob cast as the voice of Karen. Who knew?!
Ethan Slater who plays SpongeBob in the Broadway Musical
Even though Tom Kenny is the voice for the TV show, let’s tip our hats to Ethan Slater who plays SpongeBob in the musical. It’s not an easy character to just take over and try to emulate but he literally was perfection on stage.
He nailed the voice, the atmosphere and the overall appearance without any issues or hiccups at all.
I was thoroughly impressed with the amount of work and details that went into the making of the musical from all of those that were involved.
Final Thoughts on SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical
Two words. I’m obsessed. This isn’t a musical that I’m one and done with. Nope, no way. I’ll be watching this over and over again and not feeling as though I need to stop anytime soon.
If you’re a fan of SpongeBob as I am, I highly recommend that you sit down and enjoy some family time watching this musical together.
The Musical comes out on DVD on November 3rd!
