Last Saturday we were able to pre-screen “Sing” at our local AMC movie theater, there were other families there since Universal Pictures promoted “Sing Saturday”. They were giving out 200 tickets out at each local AMC movie theater, there were a lot of people that came to the showing. So much so that they ended up turning people away, luckily we were in the front of the line so we were able to score some pencils and some activity sheets.
We got there at 8 am, they let us in theater at 9 am, and the movie started promptly at 10 am. It was a lot of fun trying to keep my 4-year-old and 17-month-old occupied! There were no previews beforehand so the movie started right away.
The movie itself has a wonderful storyline and each character has a wonderful story to tell as to why they want to join the Singing contest. I have to say as a mother I related the most to Rosita, she is one of the main characters that is a mother herself, who has big dreams, and 25 children. My 4-year-old also fell in love with her singing because like my son says, “She is a talented mommy piggy.”
The music had some of the latest hits, and the soundtrack is amazing. The characters were cast just right and I have to say I saw a different side of Matthew McConaughey. Matthew did an amazing job portraying Buster Moon who owns a grand theater that is falling on some hard times. Seth MacFarland does a great job as his character Mike the mouse although he is pretty sassy throughout the movie.
There were definitely some really funny moments throughout the movie, I am not sure if my 4-year-old got them or not. Me and my husband had a few laughs, my 17 month year old enjoyed the music. If you do not have plans for December 21st I would make plans to head to the theater to see this before Christmas! Illumination does a great job again with their animation, seems that their movies keep getting better and better.
Synopsis:
Set in a world like ours but entirely inhabited by animals, Sing stars Buster Moon (McConaughey), a dapper koala who presides over a once-grand theater that has fallen on hard times. Buster is an eternal—some might even say delusional— an optimist who loves his theater above all and will do anything to preserve it. Now faced with the crumbling of his life’s ambition, he has one final chance to restore his fading jewel to its former glory by producing the world’s greatest singing competition.
Five lead contestants emerge: Mike (MacFarlane), a mouse who croons as smoothly as he cons; Meena (Kelly), a timid teenage elephant with an enormous case of stage fright; Rosita (Witherspoon), an overtaxed mother run ragged tending a litter of 25 piglets; Johnny (Egerton), a young gangster gorilla looking to break free of his family’s felonies; and Ash (Johansson), a punk-rock porcupine struggling to shed her arrogant boyfriend and go solo.
Each arrives under Buster’s marquee believing that this is their shot to change the course of their life. And as Buster coaches each of his contestants closer and closer to the grand finale, he starts to learn that maybe the theater isn’t the only thing that is in need of saving.
