When summer hits, it marks the time for everyone to start going outside more and more including a Summer Picnic. It opens up the chance for you and your family to spend a sunny weekend out and about instead of staying indoors.
What’s more, it’s the perfect time to go on a family picnic in a nice park somewhere. This is a great way to spend time with the family and make the most of the nice weather.
A great picnic starts and ends with great food. Bearing that in mind, here are some ideas for what you should bring along to your family picnic:
Cold Meats
Naturally, when you’re going for a picnic, you’re not going to have access to an oven or microwave. So, unless you bring along a BBQ, you’re going to want to eat foods that don’t need any cooking. Cold meats are perfect picnic foods as they’ve already been cooked and can go with just about anything. You can have cold chicken drumsticks that can be eaten on their own or pulled apart and put in a sandwich. Then, there are smaller items like a summer sausage or salami that work well as a little snack on the side to nibble on when you’re peckish. Generally speaking, chicken, sausages, and cured meats are the best ones to bring along to a summer picnic.
Finger Foods
Picnics are best when you don’t have to use any cutlery to eat the food. Consequently, this means finger food is a must-have at any picnic. Cold meats also fall into this category, but there are so many other things too – many of which are great veggie options. You can get some vegetable samosas or falafel for those of you that don’t eat meat. Then, there are some party classic like pineapple and cheese on cocktail sticks! Bite size pasties and pastries are a big hit too, they’re easy to eat, and you can make your own if you really want to push the boat out. Spend some time in the grocery store getting stocked up on finger food to take to your family picnic.
Fruit Salads
Fruit salads are really great to bring along to a picnic. For one, they’re nice and colorful, which helps fit the summer vibes you’ll have going on. Secondly, they’re easy to make, and you can include as much fruit as you want to keep everyone happy. Thirdly, they’re easy to eat, you can put the fruit in little tubs, and everyone can snack on it throughout the day. Finally, fruit salads are incredibly healthy! So, you get your kids out of the house enjoying the fresh air and being active while also getting them to eat some of their five a day too. It’s the perfect picnic food, and you find kids are more likely to eat fruit at a picnic where they don’t have cupboards to roam through and sweet treats to try and sneak.
If your family is planning a picnic this summer, think about all of these food ideas before you go. They’ll help you fill that picnic bag full of delicious goodness.
