If you have never really seriously considered Alabama as a vacation destination before, now is the time to reconsider. It is the kind of place that you could visit several times and get something different on each occasion.
Sports
Considering there are no professional football or baseball teams in Alabama, you may think this a strange choice to include on this list. However, if you are a lover of golf, there are plenty of places where you can practice your favourite past time including the Grand Hotel Marriott Resort. Other popular sports that the region is known for include NASCAR, college football, and sport fishing.
History
Just a few of history’s famous figures who originate from here include Jesse Owens, George Washington Carver, and Harper Lee. One of the most historical cities in the state at over 300 years old is Mobile, which is the birthplace of Mardi Gras. The city of Selma played a huge role in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and is another great place to visit.
Scenery
You may not associate Alabama as being a place of natural beauty. Snaking through the mountains in the north, the Tennessee River offers some stunning views along the way. You could also head out to the sandy beaches along the Gulf of Mexico for an entirely different side to the state. For a more secluded and quiet beauty, head over to one of the old farms or sugar plantations that are dotted all over Alabama.
Science
Alabama may be lesser appreciated as a science destination than some of the more trendier coastal states, but it is home to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville which is the largest space flight museum in the world. A few of the things that you can enjoy while you are there include interactive displays, IMAX movies, and simulators.
Quirkiness
Beyond the regular sites, there are plenty of more quirky attractions which you can enjoy during your time in Alabama. For example, if you ever wanted to see a full-sized fibreglass replica of Stonehenge (who hasn’t?) then you are in luck as there is one just outside the city of Elberta. Another potential option is the Ave Maria Grotto in Cullman which contains over 100 miniature versions of famous buildings and shrines.
Cuisine
The final reason that we are going to give as to why you should visit Alabama is the cuisine. BBQ is one of the integral parts of local culture, and there are many high-quality restaurants across the whole of the state. Every ‘pit master’ has their own style, and it is always worth asking the locals to find out their personal recommendations.
Hopefully, these six reasons have given you plenty of excuses to visit Alabama for yourself and enjoy a different side of America which you may not have seen before.
